Have you ever said, “A part of me wants to go for this promotion, but another part of me is terrified of failing”? This isn’t just a figure of speech. At Golden Oak Family Counseling, we use Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help you understand that your mind is made up of different “parts,” each with its own perspective, feelings, and history.
IFS is a transformative, evidence-based approach that views the mind as an internal family. When these parts are in conflict, we feel anxious, stuck, or overwhelmed. When they are in harmony, we feel a sense of calm and clarity.
The Concept of the “Internal Family”
In IFS, we categorize our inner parts into three main roles:
-
Managers: These parts run your daily life. They try to keep you “in control” and protect you from pain by overworking, perfectionism, or people-pleasing.
-
Firefighters: When painful emotions break through, these parts react impulsively to “put out the fire.” This might look like binge-eating, substance use, or sudden outbursts of anger.
-
Exiles: These are the parts that carry the most pain—often from childhood. They are “exiled” by the managers and firefighters to keep their trauma from overwhelming the system.
Leading with the “Self”
At the core of every person is the Self. The Self is not a part; it is your seat of consciousness—the essence of who you are. The goal of IFS at our Temecula practice is to help you unblend from your reactive parts so you can lead your life from your Self.
When you are “in Self,” you experience what we call the 8 Cs:
-
Calmness, Clarity, Compassion, and Confidence
-
Courage, Creativity, Connectedness, and Curiosity
How IFS Therapy Works
During your sessions, our therapists—such as Dr. Nima Jafari or Justin Navarro—will guide you to:
-
Identify your parts: Notice when a specific “voice” or “feeling” is taking over.
-
Befriend the protectors: Instead of fighting your managers or firefighters, we learn to understand their positive intent—they are just trying to keep you safe.
-
Heal the exiles: By approaching your inner pain with the compassion of the Self, you can witness and “unburden” the trauma held by your exiled parts.
